What you might see on a Longboat Key night kayak tour

A 10,000-lumen LED strip under the hull lights up the seagrass flats. Here is what guests find below the kayak, and what happens at the end of the night.

A window into the flats after dark

Our kayaks are clear, floor and hull included, so there is nothing between you and the sea floor but an inch of acrylic. After dark the LED lighting turns the shallow seagrass flats into a lit-up window, and your guide points out what is moving below.

A note on wildlife: seeing marine life is a perk of this tour, not a guarantee. It is wild water and every night is different, but on a typical night there is plenty to find.

What guests commonly spot

Why a clear kayak works so well at night

Most of the tour is in 1 to 3 feet of water over seagrass, which is the kind of shallow habitat where small creatures shelter and feed. The light under your kayak lets you see through the water without a boat engine, a mask or a snorkel. You drift slowly, so there is time to look.

Show and tell on the beach

About 60 minutes in, we head back to the beach for a 15-minute hands-on show and tell, included for everyone. Your guide lays out what the group netted during the tour, such as crabs, shrimp, starfish and small fish, so you can look closely and ask questions. Everything goes straight back into the water where we found it.

Quick answers

Will we definitely see marine life?

No. Viewing marine life is a perk of the tour, not a guarantee. On a typical night guests spot fish, crabs, shrimp and rays, and sometimes manatees or dolphins.

Are there alligators?

No. This is saltwater on the Gulf side. You paddle shallow coastal flats, not a freshwater river.

Do you keep what you catch?

No. The group's finds are shown during the 15-minute show and tell, and every creature is returned to the water at the end.
